I’ve worked at Socrata for 4 years as a senior software engineer and an engineering manager. In my experience, it’s been a very welcoming environment for female engineers. During my time at Socrata, I’ve had the opportunity to try management, and been given numerous great technical leadership opportunities. I can’t point to any instances where I didn’t feel supported or rewarded fairly in terms of promotions, recognition or compensation. I’m an infinitely more qualified and seasoned engineer thanks to the opportunities I’ve been given here.

Our bold social mission – make government more effective by helping it be more data-driven – tends to attract engineers with an idealistic streak who care deeply about fostering a diverse and inclusive workplace. Many of us are involved in company-wide diversity and inclusion efforts, and volunteer our time at organizations like Ada Developers Academy. Our engineering leadership group (managers and senior/principal engineers) is about one-third female, which is obviously not where we would like to be, but still almost unheard of at most smaller software companies.

One area where I think Socrata could improve is around parental leave. While Socrata’s policy is pretty standard for a smaller tech company in Seattle, and I was fully supported by my manager in negotiating some additional time off when I became a mom, I would love to see us provide a more generous benefit to all employees as standard policy.

I have been with Socrata for over two years. What I love about being here is how nimble and efficient our small product development department is. It’s easy to get things done.
Also, it’s a great environment for learning because of the breadth of problems you can tap into solving and highly collaborative culture where you can learn from others. I feel that in two years at Socrata I’ve progressed professionally more than in five years at a big corporation that operates quite differently.

There are many strong female leads among engineers at Socrata, I don’t feel underrepresented or alone. Working with them is, actually, quite inspiring.
