    I give LinkedIn one star for Family Friendly because of the fact there are hardly anyone over 33 working at LinkedIn (when most people start families). LinkedIn needs to learn a lesson to hire experienced employees (not just as contractors either, which is what I was), not just millennials (never seen so many “man-buns” in my life. Instead of “bring your kids to work”, they have “bring your parents to work”.

    I hope more people speak up about this ageism at LinkedIn and other tech companies!

    I worked as a contractor for about a year – this might be useful for those considering what they might see as a lucrative offer in an Internet company. Push for a permanent role cos things move fast and the benefits are vastly different. You might be the thing that gets left behind, with a lack of job/financial stability.

    I joined for the opportunity to be an individual contributor in a small, dynamic team for an amazing manager who supported my development and gave me greater responsibility to match my capability.

    That changed once this person left – her successor was a remote manager who paid lip service to me but made a decision to move my role to another location when my contract term was done (and hired internally for that without telling me). As a contractor this is par for the course, but I think it’s common decency to give a month’s notice – I wasn’t given that.

    Pay – In my location the pay is great – but salaries are depressed for locals to begin with. I had a colleague who was doing the same work but only got renewed by the month, bad situation.

    Career advancement – in my location seems to depend on either who you’re aligned with or how long you stick it out for a lateral hire or team promotion when someone leaves. Reorgs stress a lot of people out and many leave in a cloud of mysterious circumstances or with the sense they’re moving up not out. Everyone still stays well-connected and on good terms – this is LinkedIn after all.

    Culture – supportive in the sense that everyone speaks the same language and tries to help in a values-centric way, but this changes with the individual team/organisation.

    Family-friendly – in my location families are celebrated but the majority of new hires are unmarried or have no children. This is a place to work late and grind whenever required – again it’s all a matter of luck in getting a manager/team that respects both individual needs for time and family priorities.

    LinkedIn is a mission-driven organization with an emphasis on culture and values that is second to none. I scored Career Advancement slightly lower only because depending on the office location and function you’re in, there may be less open opportunities to move. That being said the culture very much encourages and celebrates constant learning and personal transformation. Managers and peers are incredibly supportive and helpful if you’re willing to ask and make the connections. LinkedIn empowers employees to take control of their career and the brand they build for themselves internally. Incredible place to learn and develop yourself, while having a ton of fun along the way. You’ll make lifelong friends and mentors.

    I knew for a fact that my colleagues and I all received the same salary. I rated career advancing lower due to the nature of my role, but management was happy for me to progress wherever I could.
