I started at HP in Germany in 1990. Back then it was a great work culture to learn and excel. The workplace culture was friendly and people were always willing to share their knowledge. Management was visionary, supportive and encouraging and wanted to make this place a great place to work. We were proud to work for HP, we felt valuable and we were loyal. I was part of the Semiconductors group and split to Agilent Technologies and later Avago Technologies. Times changed, it was not a great workplace anymore as it used to be. I left the industry in 2008 to pursue another career. I like to think back of good old times at HP back in the day! The rate and review is for the time from 1990-2001.

I liked working for HP, but, at that time, I was the last salaried full-time person they hired without benefits. I was a new college grad, and a big company like HP didn’t offer a lot of opportunity for advancement, but my boss was a woman and her boss was a woman.

I didn’t agree with their policy of ranking our large group from 1 to 15 in order. That meant someone had to be last even if two, three, or four people worked equally. I wasn’t ranked on this scale so it didn’t affect me personally, but I saw how demoralizing it was for my coworkers.

It was a good starter job out of college, but it taught me quickly that I don’t like big companies and I moved onward and upward on a fast track at my next couple jobs so I’m glad I didn’t stay more than a year.

They also spent a million dollars on a system from Anderson Consulting to “slot” orders for VARS so they could have a dependable date of when they would get a delivery. What VARs really wanted was faster delivery of product when they made a sale. HP was doing JIT (just in time manufacturing) to reduce overhead costs.

If they had asked anyone in our group we could have told them what they really wanted. It was a huge fiasco as sometimes orders were misplaced because they were faced in, and customers would threaten to never do business with hp again, so other large customer orders were displaced to pacify them; But now the displaced orders had to go to the back of the line and wait 12 weeks.

This is when Dell came in and gained huge market share over HP NADO (North American Distribtion Organization) because companies could order direct from Dell who built to order and get their laptops and PCs in a timely manner without problem and having to deal with a VAR or pay their markup.
