My time at Logistics Data Systems (a Dun & Bradstreet company) was probably the worst and most stressful in my professional life. The president of the company was a British man who thought that Southern women were stupid. He went out of his way to let me know almost daily. He allowed his first in command and that man’s secretary to bully me daily, and the lack of respect was horrible. I left the company not long after I arrived and took with me a feeling that I was worthless and would never be able to advance in the world. The jealousy I encountered from other women at the company was solid and very real. Later, I found out that these women thought I was sleeping with my boss (NOT TRUE), and all of the ugliness had been the result of a rumor started by the first in command’s secretary. The fact that the president of the company found the behavior preferable to protecting the new person was shocking and disappointing. Apparently, the woman had some “personality issues” that the company had grown to accept and didn’t want to upset her by calling attention to her abhorrent manner. I was new and expendable. She had been there a long time and had dirt on so many.

Now that I am much older, I know what I was dealing with all those years ago, but when it was happening, it was horrifying. I was in my mid-twenties and quite naive about how office politics worked. Stupid me. I thought going to work and doing a great job would result in my advancement and acceptance. Boy, was I ever wrong.
