I had a senior role in the UK and found the culture to be very supportive, with a people-oriented outlook. During the pandemic, adjustments were made for colleagues who were in a difficult position to work. Every employee was regularly discussed in terms of both performance and potential, and the company was keen to improve diversity (including gender diversity) at every level.

I worked for Capital One for 4 years. Capital One (in Illinois) is confused about their identity and their place in the world. The work is ambiguous. They claim collaboration is a core value, so much so, they believe, collaboration can only be achieved when teams are co-located. However, the performance review process not only rewards those who out pace their peers, it punishes those who don’t stand out. This fosters an incredibly competitive atmosphere, where, if you stop to pull your teammate along, your own career could suffer.

They are practicing agile, yet they have eliminated Business Analysts and Testers, thus the developer now does everything themselves except manage priorities and run ceremonies.

The tech environment is ruled by clicks. If you fit in, you will do well. In my 20+ years of professional work, this environment is the clicky-est I’ve ever experienced.

Leaders can’t make up their mind about the technical direction they want to go in and large departments find themselves waiting in limbo for direction for months.

My experience with Capital One was amazing! The environment and people this company employs is what you imagine a good call center job should be. The pay started average but the growth and promotion availability was always present. The company truly cares about the work life balance of their people. Will always be one of my top places to work.

My experience at Capital One (some years ago) was good in general. I no longer work there. Great managers and really bad ones too. I was paid fairly and have freedom and life balance. My only comment is that senior management should pay closer attention when something is wrong and when managers are not treating fairly an associate. Maybe that is different now.

My experience at Capital One was different depending on the country. I was highly impressed by the US operation based in Richmond and Maclean. There were strong female leaders who were always open to having conversations about career development. I was impressed by the culture of the organization and felt privileged to be a part of it. However, my experience in the Canadian office, where I was based, was not the same. The leadership in Canada was not strong at all, and in particular, the female executives were not what I would consider role models. Their behaviour was unprofessional at times, and they did not inspire other people to follow them. I would not recommend working in the Canadian office, but offered a chance at working in the US, I would definitely accept.
