Why the words in your job description matter
- Landmark research by Gaucher, Friesen & Kay (2011) found that job adverts in male-dominated fields use more masculine-coded language — and that when women read those adverts they find the role less appealing and feel they would belong less, even when they are equally able to do the job.
- Long lists of “X+ years” and “must-have” requirements disproportionately deter women, who are statistically less likely to apply unless they meet nearly every criterion. Trim to the essentials.
- Postings without a salary range shrink and skew the applicant pool; transparency is now expected (and legally required in a growing number of places).
- Phrases like “culture fit,” “young and energetic,” or gendered pronouns quietly signal who is — and isn’t — welcome.
This tool won’t write the JD for you, but it catches the wording that narrows your pipeline — in seconds, before you hit publish.
How the Inclusivity Score works
- The scan starts every posting at 100 and deducts points for a strong masculine-coded lean and for each inclusivity issue it finds.
- Gendered balance: a heavy masculine tilt costs the most; a balanced or feminine-leaning posting costs nothing.
- Issue flags: excessive “X+ years” requirements, no salary range, exclusionary phrases, and no flexible-work mention each deduct points.
- Every deduction comes with a specific rewrite suggestion so you can win the points back.
The score is directional guidance based on published research — not a compliance verdict. Always read the individual flags in context.
