Global Relay Hosts WomenHack Vancouver: Collaboration, Community & Growth Behind the Scenes

At WomenHack, we love going behind the scenes with the companies that open their doors to our community. This time, we connected with the team at Global Relay to learn more about their culture, values, and what makes their workplace stand out.

What inspired Global Relay to partner with WomenHack and host the community in your space?

Global Relay has always been a strong believer of partnering with the community and local organizations to bring people together. We employ a diversity of employees within our organization and we’re happy to champion this cause further by providing an enriching and welcoming environment.

In what ways does your physical workspace bring your culture to life, and what do you hope guests take away from their visit?

We foster a culture of open collaboration for people in all disciplines (Engineering, Design, Product, Cyber Security, etc), with a complete open layout floorplan across all floors – we really encourage our employees to collaborate and build strong connections day in and day out. Hopefully, after having attended WomenHack, the visiting guests will be able to see a glimpse of the culture/values that we embody.

How would you describe the career growth experience at Global Relay, and what sets it apart from other organizations?

Our company has always been a strong advocate for internal development and movement. That’s primarily the reason why we rarely post for leadership/management level roles as we believe in fostering internal growth within our workforce. The day to day experience is unique in that we truly do our utmost to promote a welcoming and collaborative environment that pushes our employees to get their heads together to build something amazing together. This is no slight on any other workplaces as we’re confident that they do this as well – but with our track record of long tenured employees – it really speaks for itself.

What initiatives or programs at Global Relay help support and uplift talent from diverse backgrounds?

Global Relay endeavors to promote diversity as much as possible within its walls. With initiatives such as our internal Women in Technology events and our corporate Global Relay Culture Club, we try our best to create opportunities for people from all walks of the Earth to come together to connect and collaborate.

We’ve also successfully built a strong internship/co-op program that has been running for nearly 15 years now (and quite a number of them have returned to Global Relay to become full time employees). Fun fact: Our very first co-op ever, hired back in 2012, is still with Global Relay today and is now a Senior Software Engineering Manager, leading the technical teams in our London office in the UK.
