Zenefits has pretty good compensation and benefits for employees. They also provided us lunch every day, drinks, and snacks. Career advancement is a bit more difficult. I got promoted twice during my time at Zenefits, but had to fight tooth and nail to get both promotions. One of my promotions didn’t include a salary increase. The worst issue I have experienced at Zenefits is being stuck under poor team management. One of the best things about Zenefits is the culture. I enjoyed going to work every day because I liked the people. Everyone I came into contact with was friendly and helpful. It was a very supportive work environment. Another great thing about Zenefits, is that it is family friendly. From my experience, if you had a family emergency or something that needed to be taken care of at home, my manager was usually flexible to let us work from home to take care of important matters. Zenefits also had bring your child to work day. Overall I had a positive experience during my time at Zenefits.

The pay is about average for the SF area, but you need to be willing to fight for what you think you’re worth. I came in justifying my worth and was able to secure a salary that was still a paycut, but very fair seeing as I made a lot more than my peers. I had to work hard for what I did get and it was still a paycut.

Career advancement is also there, if you are willing to fight like crazy for it. I was around during the Zenefits bubble where they over hired and advancement was competitive. If you are lucky enough to get on a favored team with a seasoned manager that had the time to advance you, then you will be promoted. Unfortunately, that is far and few between at Zenefits. I was promoted twice and each time I needed to be an advocate for myself. Oddly many mangers were reluctant to let team members advance for
fear it meant more work for them and their team, even if it meant it was
the best thing for that person/the company. I oftentimes worked with managers and VP’s in other departments to get help moving when I saw an opportunity. I think that is par for the course when you have an inexperienced team of managers in charge of your career path. Many managers spent a lot of time justifying why their teams should not be responsible for work. There is a lot of shifting of ownership and blame at the management level, it was a little disheartening. I often thought why we’re not thinking about the customer and where it makes most sense for the work to go versus which team or person can we push the work off to. There was never time to really think through problems for longterm solutions.

The culture was very competitive, which is fine, but there was a hive mentality that takes place which can be damaging to the business and clients. Case in point was the string of borderline unethical business decisions and employee behaviors that took place within the last few years. I knew several people who tried to alert management, but were silenced and worse, ostracized. It could be compared to Uber in that way. I am hopeful it’s cleaned up in the last year especially with the downsize.

There were not a lot of families as the average age is pretty young. You could bring your dogs to work, no cats though although there were some people who tried. The late nights and the workload make it tough for worklife balance, especially if you have a family.

Before I voluntarily lefted Zenefits, I learned a whole lot. I would have stayed if there were more experienced managers who were concerned about growing their teams, their individual contributors ands serving the customer. Many of the managers were too concerned with their own advancement, and corporate survival, that they did not have the bandwidth or desire to coach and support.

I’ve grown more in my time at Zenefits than in any prior company. The work is challenging, I’m supported by my leaders to excel, and given chances to take on projects I would never had in prior jobs.

My pay has been fair and has grown in line with positive performance feedback. I’ve also had the opportunity to interact at all levels of the organization and it is great to get face time with the leadership team. I can take the time I need for personal things – my manager trusts me to get things done and it’s never been an issue if I need to work from home or take time off.

There has been a lot of change at the company and I think some of the larger organizations have felt this the most. I have very high confidence in our new leadership and am proud to be part of what’s next.

I’ve never worked with a smarter group of people! We have been challenged and continue to think on our feet, but I wouldn’t change it for the world. Highly encourage any go-getters to look deeper than what you see in the press!

Zenefits had a generally good compensation structure among peers, relatively competitive within the marketplace. There was not much career advancement or coaching from managers or upper levels. People were promoted quickly, but not necessarily set up for success when I was working there in the earlier stages. I’m not sure how things have changed over time, but I hope that some of the initiatives have stuck and they are working towards helping their employees.
