I worked as a manager at The UPS Store Solutions + Support campus in San Diego, CA. The culture was not a good fit for me, primarily due to inflexibility, challenging communication, and a less-than-ideal work/life balance. For example, “you can work remotely but only in San Diego…”. ?! Granted, that policy was dictated by department, but you’ll want to ask about this if you are local and wanting to work remotely while planning to travel domestically on occasion.
From a tech perspective, they simply do not have a sufficient number of developers to maintain current software used by the stores, much less further enhance the digital footprint of The UPS Store products/services. Unfortunately, that’s exactly the user need for many of the products…create or develop software solutions for a more tech-savvy generation of consumers. A more “old school” culture permeates the company, with departments often siloed or unaligned in their goals. I DID enjoy many of my hard-working colleagues and especially the highly motivated and inspiring franchisees (store owners). Perhaps parent company UPS will someday invest more heavily in technology for The UPS Store, but until they do, I would recommend The UPS Store HQ primarily for entry-level applicants looking to gain a bit of experience or for higher level applicants seeking a decent benefits package.
