    Equal pay: I’ve seen some inequality with regards to the equity side of offers going out. This probably has something to do with the candidate’s ability to negotiate aggressively for more stock. Receiving a salary out of band is rare so that may keep the cash compensation relatively in check between men and women.

    Career advancement: this depends on how well you play the politics. Right now whether or not you receive a promotion has more to do with how well you exhibit our “cultural values” and how well you get along with your manager than your measured achievements. This inherently flawed performance review system is supposedly undergoing revisions. Moreover, a common hiring practice is to down-level new employees– meaning you’re undervalued from day 1. Your level directly impacts your compensation and career growth. If negotiating, lobby really aggressively for a level and title appropriate for your experience.

    Supportive culture: this depends on your own team. I happen to have individuals around me who are incredibly supportive, but this is not something that’s institutionalized.

    Family friendly: of Google, drop box, and lyft, Uber allows the shortest maternity and paternity leave. There is “unlimited vacation” which is code for “they don’t have you pay you out if you quit with unused vacation time.” Moreover, there aren’t as many family planning benefits compared to other companies (I.e. Facebook covers egg freezing).

    Also note: there is no 401k matching and Uber has the least number of recognized holidays compared to most other tech companies (I.e. we do not receive president’s day off).

    Bottom line: the company itself will not look out for you, but the right manager and team will. For all the bad press Uber deservedly receives about their culture, they have hired​ some incredible people along the way. Observe your interviewers and prospective manager keenly. You’ll know if you’re joining the right team.

    I was at Uber from almost the start. I love the energy, love what the product stands for. Loved my manager,until we grew and new managers came in not knowing what they were doing and started running the department into the ground.
    Definitely there is no work/life balance, it is all work. I liked that as I accomplished a lot and was able to enjoy the labor of my hard work. and I liked to flexibility to work from home; occasionally until the new management came in changed it all.
    Not everyone was treated according to their hard work when it came to compensation, the younger you are the higher the increases and the equity were., plus male versus female, male received more.
    I still love Uber and will love it forever regardless!!

    I echo the comments of others on the quality of the work — never will you have a job as interesting, challenging and constantly changing as this. The quality of the people to date is also incredibly high, and the network I’ve gained from working here is second to none. The mission of the company is also super inspiring and I’ve seen first hand how this company is changing the world and the way people move within it.

    The downsides are big though. I worked my entire maternity leave only to return to a job that had been basically eliminated and handed out piecemeal to the people who had been angling for my job the entire time and took my absence as an opportunity — the spoils going to the loudest, most aggressive and credit-grabbing people in my absence. There was no attempt to protect my job, or give credit where credit was due, and I returned to find my direct reports cut in 1/4 and my job reduced to almost nothing. I tried to transfer to another product team, my boss then blocked the transfer, and retaliated against me for raising genuine issues that need to be addressed. I now waste away in that group, wondering what I did to deserve this punishment. The review process was used to further reduce my influence and keep me stuck under him.

    Bottom line: very tough place to work, but if you can find a healthy team with a manager who will protect and promote you and not retaliate against you if threatened by you, then it is a dream job. It is all in the team.

    I recently started at Uber, but so far my experience has been:
    – Pay is equity heavy but definitely competitive
    – Career advancement opportunities are everywhere given challenges/problems to solve are everywhere
    – Very long hours but incredibly interesting challenges– neither face time nor grueling hours are enforced by management so much as driven by competitive individuals
    – My team is very supportive, but I imagine this varies from team to team like anywhere else
    – I can’t yet comment about how family friendly Uber is (too new), but the idea of starting a family is daunting given the hours and amount of work..

    Shocking to most, but I’ve never worked at a better place! I love the energy here and flexibility. As a woman, I know you can be successful if you find your knack that you are passionate about. Parts of the organization definitely function differently (in being collaborative and supportive) but that’s typical of most large organizations. I’ve felt more empowered here as a woman than I have in my past 10 years of working. I honestly love my job @ Uber and the benefits are top notch.

    Given the past media frenzy, I know the leadership team is passionate about making a change and truly making this one of the best places to work and I fully support them. I strongly encourage women to join the force and not shy away from applying because of what the media portrays. From my perspective, it’s not the full picture of all the good that goes on here.
