I was an SDE for 5 years with Tableau. The company and its technology is incredibly innovative and the projects are wonderfully passion-driven…

With the caveat of having rigid hierarchies, limited time and resources to explore and expand on your career, and lip-service when it comes to diversity. On average, the Seattle engineering office has teams of 7-15, with up to 3 women per team (often less) and incredibly few women who are SDEs. Most of the development team’s women are designers, tech writers, and program managers – none of whom actively code on a regular basis. There is little to no support for female developers among peers. Management (especially upper management) has zero female representation. Through lunch discussion, I discovered my female colleagues were earning $85-97k/year and equivalent positions for male colleagues were $90-105k/year. When we approached upper management, they suddenly found themselves too busy to speak with us. Diversity isn’t actually being addressed and internally, they know it. If the attrition doesn’t get you, the burnout will.

I had the fortune of reporting to a fantastic manager who was very transparent about his thoughts and opinions about the company and encouraged me to look elsewhere for a more positive culture. I am glad I did.
