ModCloth was a hypocritical company. Has low pay. And says it stands for feminism yet keeps wages low. Would never work here again.

I worked in customer service just for a seasonal job. Being that it was seasonal, I knew it would be coming to an end at some point, so that part was not shocking. All the seasonal employees were brought into a conference room and told we needed to pack up and leave immediately that morning. While I know this was coming from higher ups in the company, I wish they could’ve given us at least a days notice and not rushed us out of the building like we were criminals. My managers on my team were actually really wonderful and I think they were just as mortified about how it was done. While being in customer service was a good experience to have it was a highly stressful job and I was definitely glad it came to an end. I can’t speak too much to career advancement as I knew I was a temporary employee. Hopefully, the company learns a better way to let people go at the end of the season to not make them feel unappreciated and criminal like.

As a lot of other reviews indicated, this company was very political. The only way to advance at Modcloth was to make besties with someone high up. If you got caught in the crossfire between two battling team leads, your life became a living hell. I got demoted despite exceptional performance reviews because the head of product was mad at my manager—and was denied a raise for the same reason. There’s zero room for career growth, so you better be content spending years going through the same motions.

Also they keep talking about how wonderful the open PTO policy is, but in reality you’re never allowed to take a day off. I’d get 3am phone calls, text messages at the airport, asking to do things. Once a Project Manager tried to pressure me into cancelling my family vacation because she was trying to squeeze in a last minute project.

I ended up in therapy after my 2.5 years with ModCloth. This was a couple years ago, but I still bring the moments up to current coworkers, at the amazing company I’m with now, for shock factor.
The reviews about the division between the distribution center and the office are legit. They told people that there was room to grow within, from the FC to the office, but that’s a rarity UNLESS you became close friends with the folks in the office and/or HR.
There was also racism. There was inequality of pay, I’m sure of it. People got promoted based on your friendships with managers. People got demoted because they would break down and cry at work from the amount of verbal bullying (because “emotional instability” may deflect from the role).
Managers often took their employees ideas and ran with it like they were their own.

Since then, I’ve refused to shop at ModCloth and, even before their public sale to Jet.com, I told horror stories about working there to friends who shopped there.
I got out before the many layoffs and the new CEO; I’m glad I did.

Probably the worst job I ever had. They continuously laid people off in huge sweeps then a few months later, they’d just rehire those same positions with different people. It is very much a clique-ish, highschool mentality culture. The HR department is in a constant state of turn-over but with a few exceptions and (and I know I’m sounding like a hater here) it’s the worst people who seemed to keep their jobs there. The girl in HR Pittsburgh? She used to brag to the rest of us how she NEVER responded to her voicemails from the employees in the distribution center. Bad company to work for unless you’re willing to drink the kool-aid and lots of it. PS: my former boss promised me he’d help me if I ever needed him to find my next job. When I reached out to him for a reference (twice) he ignored me (twice). Nice. I’d rather have a strong, collaborative culture of peers than “talent show Wednesdays”.
