The Level Crossing Removal Project (LXRP) was established by the Victorian Government to oversee one of the largest rail infrastructure projects in the state’s history.

LXRP is part of the Major Transport Infrastructure Authority and our projects fall under Victoria’s Big Build.

Central to the project is the elimination of 75 level crossings across metropolitan Melbourne by 2025, in addition to other rail network upgrades such as new train stations, track duplication and train stabling yards.

Benefits
Some of the core benefits that come from removing a level crossing are:

improving safety, by removing the danger of trains sharing a crossing with vehicles and other users
reducing congestion, by eliminating frustrating delays caused by boom gates and allowing more vehicles to pass through
improving travel time reliability, by removing uncertainty around when boom gate closures will occur and how long they will be down for
increasing capacity to run more trains on the network, without boom gates delaying vehicles and other users.
There are also other opportunities to add value for the community and commuters depending on the chosen design at each site, such as creating new open space, building new shared use walking and cycling paths or commissioning public artwork.

Our projects strive to improve the accessibility, amenity and functionality of the area around them to leave a positive legacy for years to come.

Community
Keeping communities informed about construction and consulted on potential opportunities is vital for the delivery of the Level Crossing Removal Project.

There are many opportunities to be informed and involved, including newsletters, advertising, signage, community information sessions and social media.

You can sign up for email updates or connect with us on social media to keep up to date with what’s happening on the project.

Disruptions
With so many essential projects being delivered across Melbourne, we appreciate that people may experience short-term construction impacts and inconveniences.

This will include temporary rail and road closures as we go about this important work. Other construction impacts, including noise and dust, are also anticipated.

We will provide as much information as possible to locals and commuters about construction impacts, including detours, bus replacements, alternative parking, traffic management and local impacts.
