I worked at Intel for a collective 17 years. I started in the early 1990’s being hired on by a female Director based in Santa Clara. She was Craig Barrett’s first Technical Assistant while he was COO. I loved working at Intel. You worked HARD and SHARP, then rejoiced in your successes. Our motto… WORK HARD, PLAY HARD! My boss was AMAZING. She was as smart as they come, strong, fair and supportive. I worked for her nearly 6 years in a variety of positions and departments, being promoted by her. All the while she was passed over as VP twice during that time. In my 7th year I took on a position working for a VP (Male). I was respected in my job and my thoughts. So much, that when my boss left Intel he took me along to his new company. Two years later that company was acquired and I was lead back to Intel. I was rehired by my first boss… Still, with all due respect, a Director. I found my 2nd round at Intel felt a lot more cold and corporate gray. The days of Andy Grove being President were coming to a close. The idea that you worked hard and played hard had become a thing of the past, we were much less aggressive. Then an opportunity for my boss to leave to become a VP at a nearby OEM arose and she grasped at the chance. There was no rebuttal and no counter offer. It broke my heart, she was an amazing asset and mentor. With no surprise she did so well at her next job, a fellow OEM hired her on as Exec VP two years later. By then I’d capped off in my grade and was grateful that I’d bypassed two redeployments. I decided in 2007 it was my time to move on. I currently work at a company that is HEAVY in Diversity and embraces women in leadership as well as Family First with modified work schedules. Cannot say how Intel has changed in the 10 years I’ve been gone, but that is how it was during the time I spent in Santa Clara and Folsom.

I was a low level mgr up until late ’01 and while I was generally better paid than a lot of companies, lip service was given to advancement and true equal pay. Unfortunately the worst contributors to this were HR and the few women who’d climbed the ranks but felt the need to keep other women down. I got the best support for my expertise when I had male managers. The worst process that the company followed was ranking and rating where they forced pay for performance into a bell curve so if you have a dept of stellar ee’s you still have to rate 20% on the low end. They also had no value for older ee’s or people who loved their job and didn’t want to advance or go into mgmt.
