I worked for Intel as an engineer in the assembly development group for 10 years in the 1980’s and 1990’s. After working other places, it was refreshing to have a company with a diverse work force and many women at all levels. I felt respected and everyone treated equally. It was a great place to work. They expected a lot, but they gave a lot too.

I worked in technical sales at Intel from the late 90’s until 2007. Compensation and benefits were definitely above industry average. The turnover among technical women was very high. Terrible work/family balance as all of these policies were “at the discretion of the manager”, in other words, forget it if you worked in an engineering or client-facing role. The salesforce was known as the last bastion of male supremacy…grown men in their 40’s and 50’s conducted themselves like fraternity boys. Sexual innuendo and inappropriate jokes and videos were the norm. Complaints were dutifully investigated, and then swept under the rug. The guy who harassed me and a co-worker in front of a room full of people was promoted to a GM role 3 months later. And then in our strategic planning reviews senior management would whine about how they can’t seem to retain any women. Pathetic. Judging by the above reviews, not much has changed.

I was in finance from 2000 and 2001 when the stock was going crazy and then the tech bubble burst. Intel at that time totally lacked strategy but was still one of the world’s most admired brands. HR was pushing stock options vs. salary which ended up being useless. In finance, the culture was arrogant and harsh, and there were plenty of women, but none I wanted to emulate. I had a female boss and Sr. Controller, but neither were people admirable or even terribly competent. Both were the worst examples of leaders I’ve seen in my career and were good at office politics and that’s where they put all their efforts. In key meeting, the woman leading me the meeting replied to a comment by saying, “We’re not solving world hunger here!”. That’s when I realized that I wanted to solve world hunger and leave these arrogant a-holes to worry about their stock options. It’s changed now in that the company got a dose of humility for a few years and realized they needed to be more women and friendly, and women I knew in other areas of the company had completely different expereinces.

Intel was the best company I worked for more than a decade. I advanced professionally and personally. I learned a lot and contributed my talents in various areas.
