I am a shopper/ driver. It gets the bills paid and I have fun doing it. I just wish there was room for career advancement, however for a temporary/side job, it’s fine. I gave support of culture a four-star rating because my team is really supportive. If I need help with something and I see a fellow instacarter walking by, I can say hello and ask them for help if I need it. Shopper happiness can be a wild card. They will help you when they can get back to you. Sometimes it’s a little later than when you absolutely need them, but I still appreciate their efforts.

I worked in corporate, so my experience is not as a shopper or driver. I felt that there was a bit of a snobbish startup culture, and I’ve worked in startups before but have never experience this kind of ostracization. I worked around the clock and just wanted to do my job and have a work life balance. If you don’t drink the Kool-Aid, you are treated as an outsider, and in my case demoted (after I came back from a vacation using their “unlimited vacation policy” – and I had approval, apparently you are not supposed to ever actually use that perk), at which point in time I decided to leave the company. If you are a millennial and looking to completely immerse yourself in the company and culture and drink the Kool-Aid, then it might be the place for you. If you are not into the startup tech culture that is taking over San Francisco, skinny jeans and hipsters, and if you are looking to keep your work life and personal life separate, you might want to skip Instacart.

    I was an in-store shopper.

Pay is heavily tied to performance. If you’re a faster shopper with more availability, you will be offered more hours, and more batches per hour (which means earning more tips). In-store gets paid an hourly wage, with minimal tips, while full-service gets paid entirely through tips and service fees – and there was a strong gender gap between the two positions, at least at my store.

Career advancement is negligible. I was not at any point encouraged to think of my job at instacart as a career in any way. The only people who didn’t have other jobs were drivers (although some drivers did have other jobs).

I myself received a lot of support from administration, my fellow shoppers (and store employees), and support staff. The support line, Shopper Happiness, is very hard to reach because of long wait times. Our shift leaders were generally helpful when they were available. Some of the equipment is old/cheap, and they would break often enough that shoppers would have to fix the equipment rather than call it in. Workers are encouraged to compete with one another, which is shameful and unrealistic when we’re all just trying to get the work done – i feel like we were a team *despite* the pay and placement structure, not because of it.

Instacart is *not* family-friendly. They offer healthcare, but i don’t know how good that would be. Instacart doesn’t allow parents to bring their children on shift with them, which – combined with the fact that the more you work, the better you get paid – creates a work environment unsuitable for parents, especially new mothers.

Shoppers bear the brunt of customer reviews and complaints and the system is set up to pay the drivers more where they have nearly zero liability. The app doesn’t allow proper compensation to shoppers.

Honestly, I was only there for three months before they found something on my background check and terminated my employment via email. I found this to be unprofessional of them.

Within my three months, I enjoyed working for them. I sometimes miss it, but I know I can’t go back.
I like the concept. So many companies like Shipt and Uber Eats have completely copied this original idea and attempted to make it their own.
