I work now at IBM, acquired with the Weather Channel. We’re super happy to be in an investment area of the company. I gather that the culture really depends on which group you are a part of. I’m about to have my second baby here and have had nothing but support. The flexibility to work from anywhere (office, home, daycare, in-laws house) is very appreciated. There are many people with young families in the Atlanta offices, so it’s not unusual at all to work out accommodations. I’ve had a ton of support and career investment from our leaders to advance.

I am extremely fortunate for the team I work with..my dad became sick and anything I needed to accommodate myself to care for him I was given…. I could never find the right words for IBM to express my gratitude

I worked at IBM from 1999 – 2005 as a project manager in Eastern Canada. Some of my issues may have improved since working there 12 years ago.

Family Friendly – It was family friendly as I was able to work from home when needed and I appreciated the fact that they trusted their employees to do their jobs from home.

Equal Pay – I am not sure if my pay was equal to my male counterparts, however, I do know that it was low compared to industry standards.

Career Advancement – There were not many opportunities for career advancement at the time and the few advancements there were seemed to have been based more on friendships than qualifications.

Supportive Culture – I did feel that my voice was heard for grievances and they had a great mentoring program which I found very helpful. I did not feel supported with respect to my career and there was not a lot of training offered or provided. I also felt that the east coast was often overlooked as an integral part of the IBM organization despite our many successes as a division.

I worked for IBM in Manassas, Virginia, Bethesda, Washington, and Lansing, Michigan from 1988-1992.

I’m giving a two star rating for equal pay because, as a marketing representative in Lansing, my male boss would continually raise my sales quota throughout the year – even well into December – as he lowered the sales quota of his “little buddy” .

In two years of sales and working my tail off, I was not granted the deserved Golden Circle and instead went to 100% Club with my male colleague who sold virtually nothing. My boss, however, as a sales manager, went to Golden Circle from my results. It was extremely unfair. This same man made lavicious statements about my chest to my male customer, and cultivated a very chauvinistic culture. And he over-emphasized his love of golf, when few of our customers golfed.

I loved the women of IBM and many male colleagues. It is a very professional, intelligent place to work. My entire career was shaped by the training and experiences they provided. But a few racist and sexist men were able to get away with things like expensing customer visits to strip clubs and things of that nature. It was shocking, even for the 1990’s.

The Manassas and Bethesda locations (where I’d worked as an intern) were incredible. And all of the R&D locations, manufacturing facilities, training, and technical experts I was exposed to were unparalleled.

I was very proud to work for IBM, but left because 1) I married and changed cities, 2) fear of a future experience like the one with my macho boss, and 3) because of the inevitability of the “dead end” a product I was forced to Market (OS/2). But when I meet other current or former IBMers, I know they are disciplined, hard working people who work as a team to deliver innovative solutions that contribute to the successf of businesses, governments, and education around the world.

I had a great 27 year career at IBM. I was given wonderful opportunities to advance my Career in management, mega account management with senior executives, and leading strategy assignments in corporate headquarters to help shape IBMs future direction. IBM sent me to Harvard and Boston university to grow my skills to help me lead senior executives at my accounts. I always felt I had the opportunity to go as far as my skills and ambition would allow. IBM is a wonderful company. I’d go to work for them all over again.
