I worked for IBM for 14 years. Myy career in the beginning went smoothly but I was never really made for a big unpersonal company like IBM. There is two sides, I experienced a lot of freedom in working (flexible, good pay). With that said, I was back in that time one of the few women that was well paid. When I left after 14 years I looked at the HQ building and thought “where is the soul of this company gone to?”. Management bashing when targets are not met, political games, ego’s leading, imho no true leadership. It would be good if we would not refer to ‘management’ or ‘the company’ but to the specific people who address you and how they support people doing the work in stead of only looking at targets and $. There was no balance. I learned a lot from the ‘old’ establishment (the older generation); working together with a common goal to make each other successful; that was true leadership.

I thought that sexism and ageism were things of movies until working here. It’s a big company so I can’t imagine that all groups are this way, but mine was. I was brought in as part of a cohort without having talked to my product team before taking the job and they were the worst. Straight out of a movie.

I worked at IBM for 18 months and I was unfortunately in the MaaS360 Field Sales Group part of the overall Security Team that was being phased out when I joined. My VP tired everything in his power to make this work for our team but our leadership was political and only cared about his next stepping stone as he was a mediocre long time IBMer than never stayed with the same team for more than 2 years and managed to keep moving regardless of his results. He left us to move on and the new leadership dismantled my team. I was able to get a new offer at another company before I got RA’d (like the rest of my team) but now I wished I could have networked myself to another team on the Security team because overall IBM is great company just need to be aligned with a winning team and a product that clients are willing to pay for (Security, Watson, etc).

I worked for Rational Software Corporation from 1998-2001 and left before the IBM acquisition in Feb 2003. From the start, Rational Software was a boys club with little room for growth or equal pay if you were a woman. I was passed up for a promotion twice by someone more junior than I, despite having the qualifications, experience and know-how for the job.
