    My tenure with HP spanned some 10 years out of the Compaq deal. While the lines of work-life balance were hectic and blurred, I had the career of a lifetime in what was a multi-generational setting; with inspiring managers to coach me, and a talented staff team to be amazed by. Women (we) need to find our champions. Those champions or personal brand advocates can make good things-great stuff happen for you. For me: the once-in-a-lifetime opportunity to work in the integrated planning process (aka ‘the clean room’) of Compaq and Hewlett-Packard; doors opened for learning and professional development; achieved recognition for great work, and; had support during personal life disruption. Areas for improvement as I knew them: administrivia, the performance management cycle was archaic, forced rankings, the notion of “cultural fit” in the hiring/termination process questionable, and working transition.

    I didn’t feel I was equally paid at HP, nor did I feel supported in my career advancement (by Senior Managers) despite there being job opportunities posted. Overall I learned a lot from my 4 years at HP, but I’m happy to have now moved to a more inclusive and supportive organisation.

    My first years at HP were very good. Even though I experience a great advance in my career, since I did not belong to the Sales department, I could learn from a lot of different activities and had a certain level of freedom to choose which step to take next. But it was when HP adquired EDS when things went from quite a good experience to “the worst company to work for”. The different cultures collided and we were exposed to a very cold harted way to treat employees. That killed the “old HP”.

    The most valuable lesson I learnt at that “new HP” was that there is not such thing as the “HP Family”. The “Inhuman Ressources” Manager made that very clear. What a pity.

    HP as well as the majority of tech giants today, have an over-reliance on referral networking which has led to the tech industry becoming a predominately male dominated industry.

    Most tech companies use employee’s referrals to fill open positions. Their employee’s more often than not refer people of the same ethnic/socio economic /background, and who hold similar values, beliefs and opinions.

    “A Good Fit” for their group of organization. This practice needs to change, if we are to see want to see and retain more woman and minorities in tech fields.
