I’ve been at eBay for almost 4 years now and I must say, I absolutely love this company. I started as a contractor and navigated my way through the culture to become converted to FTE and then promoted twice with visibility and respect from executive leadership, including the CEO. I’ve asked for and received more responsibility than I’d anticipated at this stage in my career and have had a global impact on the company in a short span of time. I also bring my whole self to work and have thoroughly enjoyed working with all teams across the company. That said, I also see much of what was said from the peer reviews posted here. In some areas of the company, it is very patriarchal and leadership decisions are not always trusted. The company has made some progress, but it definitely has a lot of work to do. However, the company culture has taken a major shift with the new CEO and the PayPal split. I’ve literally watched an evolution of perspectives and values across BUs and VPs and I’m optimistic about the direction of the company.

On the other hand, I am my own business. I navigated the environment and I learn and contribute to advance my own needs and skills first. Remember, we all sign “at-will” employee contracts and I believe that works two ways. In doing so, I have fully leveraged eBay’s strengths and weaknesses to my advantage to advance my career while also improving the internal employee and customer experience. With the company’s new cultural direction, I believe any employee can succeed if they engage and change the behaviors and processes with which they don’t agree. Also, this is Silicon Valley. All of the tech companies are at various stages of their economic development and cultural identity, which influences how they make decisions and build their culture. I left Google and I’m happy to be at eBay.

eBay was the worst career experience I have ever had. Lousy leadership, scattered vision statements, staff dedicated to the lowest level of effort and service but great at back stabbing true visionaries and leaders. Spending department budget on European trips including families under the guise of “work”. I have low expectations that it will survive – what a shame since they had such a head start in this niche.
