Raising the bar for global finance, Barclays owns one of Europe’s largest banks, a top market-making investment bank, the top UK credit card, and an international wealth management firm. Its flagship Barclays Bank has some 1,700 branches in the UK as well as operations throughout Europe, Africa, the Middle East, and the US. Its Barclaycard arm has more than 20 million credit cards and provides consumer lending and payment processing services, primarily in Europe. Barclays Capital is one of the largest investment banks in the world (thanks largely to its acquisition of the North American operations of Lehman Brothers). Altogether, Barclays serves more than 48 million customers in more than 50 countries.

I enjoyed working at Barclays. It is great company to work for. Hard working and dedication are well rewarded. Results oriented.

Having worked at Barclays for nearly 10 years, it is overall an OK firm at the junior levels. They have good programs “on paper” that support women in Technology but in reality in Technology it is a total boys club. The level of senior female executives at the top level to drive a culture change is severely lacking. Whilst there is lots of trumpet blowing about diversity and the need to progress top female talent it does not happen. There is a culture of “men are bulldogs” and women who speak up and are passionate about their job are constantly seen as “emotional”. Indeed they often hire and over-promote female talent in an effort to spout their gender support. However, the statistics of retaining this talent is incredibly weak, by the culture of “she was only promoted or hired as a diversity tick in the box”. Outside of Technology there is a good culture of diversity. However, if you are considering a Technology role in Barclays, look elsewhere. Women in Technology are a revolving door with a very short tenure for a reason – particularly in Investment Banking Technology.

One of the worst companies I worked for. Pitiful salaries for the minions, a culture of mistrust and poor leadership. Financial gain above everything else.

Barclays is one of the worst places I have ever worked. They treat the staff like school children. Have a culture of treating people as if the are not trustworthy. Having said that, I cannot set hat they treat women ant differently to men openly but who knows what happens behind the closed doors

I worked at Barclays many years ago and am very disappointed to see from most of the existing reviews that the company continues to have few women in senior roles of the organization.
My personal experience (though dated) at the Bank was average at best in terms of mentoring, advancement and support of well qualified female employees for senior roles in all areas of the organization. This was a British, male dominated organization then and it appears this is still the case today. I had asked for years (and had earned) the opportunity for an overseas posting at London headquarters and this request was only given any thought once I had given my resignation!
This bank needs to seriously address its deficiencies in hiring and supporting competent and qualified female employees and offer the same level of support given its male employees.
