Median pay is the midpoint of each city’s mid-level (3–5 yrs) total-comp range, shown in local currency with an approximate USD equivalent for comparison. Figures updated August 2026.

Methodology: the Women in Tech City Score

Each city earns a score out of 100 from three sub-scores, each normalised (min–max) across all 38 cities so no single market can dominate on raw numbers alone:

Score = 40% × Pay + 35% × Pay Equity + 25% × Community
  • Pay (40%) — the local median total comp for a mid-level woman in tech, converted to a common currency (USD) at approximate current FX so cities are comparable, then scaled 0–100. The highest-paying market scores 100.
  • Pay Equity (35%) — the midpoint of the city’s documented gender-pay-gap range. This one is inverted: the smallest gap scores 100 and the widest scores 0, because a high salary matters less if women are systematically underpaid.
  • Community (25%) — whether WomenHack runs recruiting events in the city. Event-hub cities score 100; cities with salary and city guides but no dedicated events score 40, reflecting the real, but smaller, access advantage.

The pay and pay-gap inputs come straight from the WomenHack women in tech salary guides — the same conservative, publicly sourced estimates behind every city salary page — and event presence reflects WomenHack’s live recruiting-event markets. Because the whole ranking is recomputed from that data on every page load, it stays honest: change a source number and the table re-sorts itself.

This is a directional benchmark for mid-level technologists, not investment or relocation advice. Cost of living, visa access, equity, and individual negotiation all shift the real picture — use the per-city guides for the full breakdown.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is the best city for women in tech in 2026?

By our composite Women in Tech City Score, San Francisco ranks #1 in 2026, scoring 90 out of 100. The score blends the local median pay for women in tech, the size of the gender pay gap, and whether WomenHack runs recruiting events in the city. San Francisco combines top-tier pay with an active WomenHack hiring community.

How are the best cities for women in tech ranked?

Each of the 38 cities gets a Women in Tech City Score out of 100, weighting three factors: median pay (40%), converted to a common currency so cities are comparable; the gender pay gap (35%), where a smaller gap scores higher; and community access (25%), based on whether WomenHack runs recruiting events there. Each factor is normalised across all cities, so the ranking is computed from the data, not hand-picked.

Which city has the smallest gender pay gap in tech?

Stockholm has the smallest documented gender pay gap in our data at 5–9% for comparable tech roles, followed by the Canadian hubs (8–10%). The widest gaps are in Tokyo, Bangalore and São Paulo (15–20%). A smaller gap raises a city's equity sub-score, but total-comp levels and event access also move the final ranking.

Does higher pay make a city better for women in tech?

Not on its own. A city can pay well yet still carry a wide gender pay gap or offer no local hiring community — so our score rewards markets that pair strong pay with pay equity and real WomenHack recruiting-event access. That is why several high-paying cities rank below hubs with smaller gaps and active events.

How can women get hired in tech in these cities?

The fastest route is meeting inclusive employers directly. WomenHack runs invite-only recruiting events in 29 of the ranked cities, where women technologists meet 15–20 vetted employers in one evening — free for candidates. Pair that with the city salary guide and pay-gap calculator to walk in with market data.
